Isodontia elegans - Grass-carrying Wasp
Last Updated: January 28, 2012

PURPOSE:
This image gallery has been created to assist visitors in the identification of wasps. For the most part, I can tell the difference between a wasp and a bee. Bees are usually somewhat chubbier and hairy, while wasps are usually slender, with a constricted abdomen. Of course, as with bees, there are also wasp mimics, most notably syrphid flies, robber flies and one of several other insects. Also, as with bees, the easiest way to determine of your wasp is really a wasp and not a fly is to count the wings. All wasps have 4 wings. All flies have 2 wings. Also, fly antenna are miniscule compared to the antenna of bees and wasps.
PHOTOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS AND DATES:
Currently, the wasp identification on this page is specific to all wasps that show up in and around my yard. These wasps, however, are also found in many other parts of the country; some, like the European Paper Wasp, are found throughout much of North America.
Unless otherwise noted, all images were taken in Northern Douglas County, Oregon.
The date each photograph was taken appears under each thumbnail image. The sex of each specimen, if known, is also indicated under each thumbnail.
