PURPOSE:
This image gallery has been created to assist visitors with spider identification. Normally, I would present mites, ticks and harvestmen seperately, each in their own gallery, but Ive photographed so few of them so far that I thought I'd combine them.
Please note: Identification of many spiders, and for that matter insects in general, are often not easily made to the species level. With many spiders, identification to species level requires photo details not easily captured in most images - closups of the palps in males and the epigynum in females - that, or you'd have to dissect the specimen. Whenever a specific species identification can be made, I include it. Sometimes, however, the ID will only go to genus, sub-family or family. As for determining the sex of a spider, the easiest way is to examine the petipalps. If the palps are enlarged (sort of like boxing gloves), then you can be relatively certain it's a male - this does not hold true for juveniles, where the palps usually appear slim, like a female's. Also, as with the Cross Spider, the abdomen is often slimmer and smaller in the male, since they don't need fat deposits or room to hold eggs. Often, the males, themselves - like the Golden Orb Weaver - are also much smaller than the females. And in cases like the Golden Rod Crab Spider and the Running Crab Spider, Philodromus dispar, the sexes look very dis-similar.
PHOTOGRAPHIC LOCATION AND DATES:
Currently, spider identification on this page is specific to all spiders that show up in and around my yard. These spiders, however, are also found in many other parts of the country.
Unless otherwise noted, all images were taken in Northern Douglas County, Oregon.
The date each photograph was taken appears under each thumbnail image. The sex of each specimen, if known, is also indicated under each thumbnail.
