PURPOSE:
This image gallery has been created to assist visitors with answering that age old question, "Is that a bee or a wasp?" (Many flies are bee and wasp mimicks - you can find images of the ones that frequent my yard in the Bug Gallery.) Currently, the bee, wasp and kin (Ichneumans Gasteruptions, Yellowjackets, Hornets, etc) identification is specific to those found in Douglas County, Elkton, Oregon - basically, all that show up in and around my yard. These bees, wasps, etc. are, however, found in many other parts of the U.S., therefore the images should help in the identification of these insects outside this area, as well. Please note: as in every yard, there are a myriad different bees, wasps and kin to be found, and I've barely scratched the surface - I seem to be discovering new ones every day of "Bug Season" (for me that's March through early October). Rest assured, as I find, photograph and identify new visitors, they will be added to the gallery.

Note how the first abdominal color pattern varies between these two specimens. The one on the right has a black triangle. The specimen on the left (2 images) has no black triangle, yet they are both examples of the Common Yellowjacket worker.
