Nature Photography, up close - By Phil

Sandhills Hornet
Vespula arenaria

Globular nests are often seen hanging under roof eves or in shrubbery close to the ground.
Disturbing the nest will cause the hornets to sting viciously.
Twice I managed to eradicate a nest by saturating it with hornet insectacide,
using a pump sprayer from 20+ feet away in the chilly early morning hours before they became active
- then I ran like hell.
