genus Coelioxys - subgenus Boreocoelioxys
Last Updated: December 27, 2011

PURPOSE:
This image gallery has been created to assist visitors with answering that age old question, "Is that a bee or a wasp?" It could be neither, for many flies are bee or wasp mimics. If you can't find your bee among the images below, it could be a wasp, a syrphid fly, a robber fly, a bee fly or one of several other insects. The easiest way to determine of your bee is really a bee and not a fly is to count the wings. All bees have 4 wings. All flies have 2 wings. Also, fly antenna are miniscule compared to the antenna of bees and wasps.
As in every yard, there are a myriad different insects and bugs to be found, and I've barely scratched the surface - I seem to discover new visitors and residents every day of "Bug Season" (for me that's March through early October). As I find, photograph and identify new bees, they will be added to the gallery.
PHOTOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS AND DATES:
Currently, the bee identification on this page is specific to all bees that show up in and around my yard. These bees, however, are also found in many other parts of the country; some, like the honey bee, are found throughout North America.
Unless otherwise noted, all images were taken in Northern Douglas County, Oregon.
The date each photograph was taken appears under each thumbnail image. The sex of each specimen, if known, is also indicated under each thumbnail.
